Pasqua

The prato (lawn)  filled with margherite (daisies) as my brother and I run around the garden looking for our Easter baskets. Walking up the hill holding a wiry basket shaped like a chicken filled with eggs to bring to church and have blessed by Don Roberto.

Walking back home in the warm sun, holding my mother’s hand, my brother beside me pulling my hair or trying to trip me up. We get home, the house smells of roast lamb, cake and ice cream and within minutes everyone arrives, nonna’s hair spray is  in the air, the party is on! We play soccer in the garden, sit for lunch, laugh, run around and then Nonna brings out two cardboard eggs, one for me and one for my brother, places them on our plates at the dinner table and they start rolling, what’s in them? I open mine and out comes a live baby chick who jumps into my hand for a quick pet and then jumps around the Easter table. They hop around and I dream of the little house I will make for her and imagine… she will be small, fluffy and yellow forever, mine.

Today it’s Easter in Sydney, no chicks, no nonna… but the Easter Bunny has come leaving baskets for Felix and Coco,

the beach is bright with sun and the house smells like roast lamb, cake and ice cream. The family arrives, we play and we feast. Buona Pasqua a tutti!

Primo: of Pizza made with the crafty Gang of Four beer.
Schiacciata with Pine Mushrooms picked by our neighbors and made into a ragu’ for our bread.


Secondo:

Slow roasted shoulder of lamb slow cooked in red whine,  stock & herbs from the garden, served on a rocket and pomegranate salad.

Couscous salad with roasted peppers, carrots and onions.

Tomatoe salad, with green peppers, onion and pomegranate molasses.

Cucumber salad with a dash of orange blossom water

Egg less tiramisu

& Apple Tart with ice cream
